Tribute by Deon Oberholzer to the late Dr Namane Magau
Mannie Hirsch and I had the privilege of knowing her as a friend and business associate since 2011.
Dr Namane was a founding member and trustee of the Intombazane Development Trust and Director of the Intombazane Holdings Company. Both these entities were created for the sole purpose of benefiting the development of young black women.
She also played a large role in our ProudAfrique Working Student Programme where we were carving out pathways to uplift young students and graduates from poor backgrounds to enter the workplace on equal footing.
We started the Working Student Program in 2020, just before the COVID Pandemic, with a pilot of 22 students, offering a full bursary, workplace experience with a small minimum wage stipend and participation into an intensive life skills programme. We have now funded nearly 100 student years with exceptional pass rates. Our dream is becoming a reality.
No matter what we asked of her, she was always willing and ready and she had this endearing quirk. Here we have a woman of great stature, someone that had rubbed shoulders as an equal with presidents, great women of our time and giants from our history, but when we asked her to intervene in something that is happening on the programmes, or be the key note speaker at our little Working Student Conference in April, she still had a way of making us feel that we were doing her a favour.
We felt that the programme was now ready for the international stage and when Dr Namane started planning her trip to the United States as speaker at the Jean Society 2022 Conference in Philadelphia at the end of May, she offered to carry the message of what we are doing to foreign shores. On last Friday evening at about half past 7, she was in contact with us to confirm the layout of her new Intombazane Business card. She was really excited about all of it.
Why am I telling you this story? She had a life filled with moments that changed the lives of many people. Dr Namane would have turned 70 in a few weeks from now and we were just getting started!
I cannot imagine walking this road without her, but we shall continue and in doing so, hopefully honour one of the greatest people I have ever had the honour of sharing time with on our journey.
We will miss her strength with her soft touch, her wisdom, her passion and the trust she gave us and I will also miss her smile and the hug every time we would meet.
On behalf of Mannie and the ProudAfrique and Gestalt Team, the Intombazane Team and the many people whose lives she touched via Intombazane: Rest in peace our dear sister and leader, may God bless your family and all the many people whose lives you have changed.
